Mini Hockey Report 14th of February, 2008 Lee DodgeAs Events Manager, it was my privilege to organise and run the South Yorkshire round of the Yazoo Mini Hockey Championship for the second time. Although there were only a few entries for each tournament, it was satisfying to organise an event that was, from what I hear, thoroughly enjoyed by all that participated, right from organisers, to coaches, and players to supporters.
I would like to thank all of the coaches of Rotherham HC, Doncaster HC, Sheffield HC, Tapton School and Westbourne School for entering teams into the event. It is down to the hard work of those volunteers that make the event possible. Also, thank you to all of the spectators that attended the events and braved the bitter cold to encourage their team and the players. Also, thanks must go to the clubs and schools for organising the supply of an umpire for their games due to the lack of volunteers. Not many people would be willing to get up on a cold February morning to brave the arctic conditions just to umpire! You commitment (and stupidity) astounds me.
Last but by no means least; my gratitude goes to SYHDG chairman and all round diamond, David Woodward for running the Boys event at Aurora, Rotherham, while I ran the Girls at Darton School, Barnsley. As with any event that is run by Woody, it was run with expert precision and efficiency.
The standard of hockey at both tournaments was great, with some very impressive hockey being played by all. There were some super goals, saves and tackles, with the standard being high across the board. All of the players deserve your praise and should be very proud of themselves. Progressing to the next round of the tournament are the teams listed below.
U11 Girls:
Winners: Rotherham HC
Runners up: Westbourne School
U13 Girls:
Winners: Doncaster HC
Runners up: Tapton School ‘A’
U11 Boys:
Winners: Sheffield HC
Runners up: Doncaster
U13 Boys:
Winners: Sheffield HC
Runners up: Rotherham HC
The date and venue for the next round of the Championship has yet to be confirmed, however, as soon as more details are know, it will be passed on to your team coach.
Once again thank you to everybody that was involved in the event. I hope to see you all entering next year.
Lee Dodge,
Events Manager.
