On January 27th the inaugural Yazoo National Schools Mini Hockey Championships – South Yorkshire County round was held at Firth Rixson Aurora Sports Club ground. Teams representing schools from all over South Yorkshire took part in Under 11 and 13 boys and girl’s tournaments organised and run by SYHDG.

There was plenty of exciting and competitive hockey on display with many talented young players taking part. For some schools these championships are the first time they had entered a team.

Nine teams entered the Under 13Girsl tournament which proved to be the most competitive. Hill House School came through a very tight semi final against Sheffield High School winning 2-1 on penalty strokes whilst Westbourne School beat Swinton Comprehensive 2- 0 in their match. In the final the match had to be decided on penalty strokes with Westbourne taking the title by 2goals to 1. Both finalists will represent the County in the North East Finals in March.

Hall Cross School won the Under 13 Boys event with Hill House coming second. But only on goal difference over Swinton Comprehensive School.

A very strong Westbourne School under 11 girls team won the Under 11 Girls tournament with another Independent School, Hill House being runners up. In the younger boys event two state schools took the honours with Swinton Brookfield winning all their matches to become Champions and Dalton Listerdale being runners up.

Organiser David Woodward thanked all those players who took part in the event and their supportive school staff who looked after then. He gave special thanks to four older girls from Sheffield High School, Hannah Davies, Abby Gallop, Sophie Beard and Gina Fairclough, who umpired all the matches and helped make the event so successful.
