U16s in cheshire (written by Dave) 27/02/2008The troops gathered outside the walled city of Chester. The local forces had chosen the time and place to give them maximum advantage. A third raiding party had travelled from the north. The weather was overcast and gloomy but this did not affect the spirit in the side. They were ready for the fight.
Titch and Cassie were to lead the assault, Ibbo, Katie, Gabby and Hattie were charged with supporting the attack and the rearguard was made up of Becky, Tash, Gina and Alex. If any breakthrough of the lines occurred then Emma was positioned to repel the attacks. Reinforcements were provided by Jess and Elle.
The commander quickly mentioned obscure concepts about commitment, communication and keeping everything simple. Strange, thought the girls, they believed they had come to play hockey. Command was passed over to the Captain Katie and after a brief interlude to prepare minds and bodies battle commenced
The first opponents were the local force. They sent wave upon wave of their troops forward and for the first 20 minutes every attack was repelled. Resolute defending and last ditch tackling meant that when a brief truce was called the scores where level. Unfortunately after resumption of the hostilities the local force quickly inflicted damage upon the side. This deflated the spirit of the side and at the end of the contest the opponents had made three telling sorties into our defences.
The local side went off to rest and regroup. The troops where asked to reform with minimum refreshment and rest against the fresh battalion from the lakes. Tactics were discussed and some changes were made to the formation in an attempt to provide a more co-ordinated display. It looked, for a short time, like this ploy had worked. Sporadic attacks broke through to their back lines. However, as time went on the troops were driven further and further back and again ‘backs to the wall’ defending was employed. Defeat at the end of the contest was by three blows to nil.
The force left the field dispirited and licking their wounds but they live to fight another day and the commander was proud of the spirit and determination on display.
