After last season disappointment with the North tournament being cancelled these girls were ready for their first county competition. Playing in what was a momentous day for South Yorkshire in our first time back in the North feeder leagues for a few years plus having 3 full squads playing in the leagues as well!
Greater Manchester have won quite a lot over the last few seasons, we never beat them last season and they also field a large number of girls into the north squads. So not the easiest opposition to face and after a few illegal driving maneuvers to get the changing rooms open we were off. The girls played extremely well and worked some great hockey with the twinnies in the middle playing their socks off. Although Manchester had some strong attacks we remained tough and even managed a few shots to pressure them. Two short corners were missed opportunities and Manchester found the back of the net through a well converted shortie.
Half time 1-0 down
We came out in the second half very tentative and Greater Manchester had all the play. Captain May was playing amazing hockey at the back and aided by Eve, George, Rachel H and Webbo kept Manchester at bay whilst we got back into the game. We attacked and attacked but despite some amazing runs into the D we just couldn’t convert. Manchester converted another shortie to put themselves 2-0 ahead and us out of the game.
Result 2-0 loss
The third period (which is played as a friendly) was not great. Despite Manchester having won they seemed determined to argue with the umpires and each other. Some interesting decisions were made and it was thanks to May keeping a cool calm head as captain that both decisions were reversed removing a goal and a flick from the game. Greater Manchester did score two goals but one was due to a bizarre umpiring decision and the other from a flick. We played great hockey and almost got a goal but just went wide and forced some strong clearances from the keeper.
A well played game, I’m proud of you all, everyone raised their game and played great hockey. Timmy the tiger our mascot was proud and May I hope you are keeping him safe! You also all looked lovely in your new kit!
Man of the match – Tied this one as I couldn’t decide! May for great work consistently a the back, Eve for the best keeping I have seen you do and a twinny for the goalline clearance off a short after stepping in at the last minute! I don’t know which twinny it was so fight it out between you!
